The Long Dark description

The Long Dark is a solo exploration-survival game set in a frozen Northern Canadian wilderness after a geomagnetic disaster. In Survival Mode, staying alive is the central objective: players make their own survival story while facing the cold and other natural threats. Survival is non-narrative, and death deletes the save.

The episodic WINTERMUTE story follows bush pilot Will Mackenzie and Dr. Astrid Greenwood after their plane crashes and separates them in the wilderness. Mackenzie searches for Astrid, while the episodes also follow Astrid as she encounters survivors and tries to find him. Unlike Survival Mode, WINTERMUTE does not feature permadeath, and players can save their progress.

Gameplay and features

  • Manage survival needs: Monitor Hunger, Thirst, Fatigue, and Cold while balancing resources against the energy required to obtain them. Every action costs Calories, making time another resource to manage.
  • Explore and gather: Search a wilderness spanning more than 50 square kilometers and 12 major regions for supplies. Activities include hunting, fishing, trapping, climbing, and mapping, alongside finding and maintaining gear.
  • Choose a Survival challenge: Survival Mode offers four Experience Modes, ranging from the quieter Pilgrim Mode to Interloper Mode, described as a severe test for experienced survivors. Custom Mode settings let players tailor the experience.
  • Take on standalone challenges: Objective-based Challenge Modes include Whiteout, which tasks players with gathering supplies before a blizzard, and Hunted, which involves escaping a bear. Completing challenges unlocks Feats that provide gameplay benefits in Survival Mode.
