Shardlight is set in a world devastated by bombs, where disease, hunger and death have become part of daily life. Amy Wellard reluctantly works for the government to qualify for the vaccine lottery, but she believes a cure exists and sets out to find it, even at the risk of her life.

The ruling Aristocrats form an oligarchy with control over all resources. Vaccines are scarce: the rich receive regular doses in exchange for unconditional support of the government, while the poor live in fear, superstition and squalor.
