Battle Axe is a top-down arcade hack-and-slash set in Mercia, a homeland threatened by the sorceress Etheldred. The central objective is to join a band of champions seeking to end her rule and defeat the evil threatening the land.

Etheldred rules from icy wastelands to the north. Every seven years, her armies travel south and select people from Mercian townships for slavery; those taken are never heard from again. This recurring threat prompts a call for champions to oppose her.
